A very keen journalist willing to promote grandparents problems.

Dear members of Grandparents Apart,

My name is Susannah Cardy and I'm a freelance journalist. I am planning to write an article about grandparents who have lost contact with their grandchildren through no fault of their own. I know the legal system allows you no more rights of access than a stranger and  I feel that this is a huge and heart-breaking problem that needs to be highlighted. Jimmy Deuchars, who runs Grandparents Apart, has very kindly agreed to send this e-mail out to all of the members of Grandparents Apart.

 - I would be really interested to speak to anyone who has wanted to adopt their grandchildren but instead seen them taken into care - perhaps because social services viewed the grandparents as too old.
  - Or anyone who has lost touch with their grandchildren, perhaps because of a divorce or death in the family.
- I would also love to hear from grandparents who are bringing up their grandchildren but do not feel they are properly supported by social services. Although my original idea was to write just about grandparents who are apart from their grandchildren,  I know that this can be a huge problem too.

Just to give you a bit more information about me, I'm a freelance journalist (my most recent article was for the Telegraph and was about my father's wish to die from terminal cancer at home). Before becoming a writer, I was a television producer and director, making a range of documentaries, including one for Channel Four about grandparents who adopt their grandchildren.

I would love to hear from anybody who is interested in telling me their story. If anybody is slightly unsure, that's fine. Please get in touch with me anyway. To start with, we'd just have a chat on the phone so that I can find out about your story and you can find out more about the article. Then you can decide if you'd like to be involved or not. My telephone number is 0208 444 1036. I will try to answer your call directly but if the answerphone is on, please leave a message with your name and telephone number and I will call you back. Or you can e-mail me on susannahcardy@hotmail.com

I think Grandparents Apart does a wonderful job and I wish all of you the very best in your quest to see your grandchildren.

Best wishes

Susannah Cardy
