A woman who admitted biting off her boyfriend's testicles has been warned she could be jailed.
Maria Topp, 44, from Wrekenton, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm at Newcastle Crown Court.
She bit Martin Douglas, her partner of five years, during a drunken brawl at his flat in February. She was granted bail to be sentenced next month and Recorder Robin Mairs warned her: "All options are open and that will include locking you up."
Topp, a mother of four with a blonde bob, bit Mr Douglas's testicles off at his flat in Waterloo Street, Newcastle, during the early hours of February 18. She cannot remember biting her partner, but can recall their fight, and the court accepted that violence had been used by both sides.
Caroline Goodwin, defending, told a previous hearing: "The defendant was on her back with the victim straddling her."
Mr Douglas was so traumatised by his injuries that emergency services staff struggled to understand him when he dialled 999. The 45-year-old DJ later required 19 stitches to his wound.
Topp denied grievous bodily harm with intent but admitted the lesser charge on the basis that there was violence used on both sides.
Gavin Doig, prosecuting, said: "This is a plea that has been considered in detail through the course of the day by the officer in the case, the CPS and particularly the injured party Martin Douglas. That is a plea that the prosecution have in the past rejected but today there has been a very important change of that basis.
"The injured party suffered a number of injuries, but particularly a very serious wound to the scrotum. The Crown's contention has always been that was caused by a bite. Until today the defence's contention was that was caused by her hands. The plea is on the basis she did indeed cause that injury with her teeth."
Recorder Mairs bailed her to allow for a probation report to be prepared and she will appear before him again on November 11 for sentence.

Reply from Scottish Government on Dedicated Minister for Older People

___
Our ref: 2011/1021247
24 October 2011

Dear Mr Deuchars
Thank you for your e-mail of 13 October to the Deputy First Minister, to various Scottish
Ministers and MSPs regarding a dedicated Minister for Older People.  I have been asked to
reply.

Nicola Sturgeon is Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing & Cities
Strategy and her current portfolio includes responsibility for matters relating to Older People
– she is the Minister for Older People.
There are many aspects of the Scottish Government’s policies that benefit older people and
that commit us to substantial spending, including:
 the freeze on council tax, introduced first in 2008-09 and now frozen for the fourth
year running in 2011-12, which particularly benefits older people on fixed incomes;
 maintenance of existing eligibility for Free Personal and Nursing Care;
 our major work on Reshaping Care for Older People, which is looking at reshaping
care services for older people in the light of the demographic ageing of the
population; and the associated £70m a year Change Fund;
 maintenance of existing eligibility for the National Concessionary Bus Travel
Scheme (in 2008-09 older and disabled concessionary passengers made 156.7
million journeys); and
 our Energy Assistance Package launched in April 2009, which tackles all aspects
of fuel poverty;

More generally, All Our Futures: Planning for a Scotland with an Ageing Population (March
2007) dealt fully and extensively with issues around the ageing of the population.  We have
implemented All Our Futures and are taking its principles forward in the development of our
policies.

Family needs Fathers FnF

I was speaking to Ian Maxwell of FnF last week at a meeting in Edinburgh and I was very impressed with the guy.  I was one that slagged FnF for not doing too much in the last 30 odd years but Ian is very well aware of this and is determined to address it and I think he should be given that chance.

There are quite a few things we can work together on as we have a common aim. ”Bringing Families Together” Grandparents aim is to maintain contact with their grandchildren provided all is well. I have said it myself and I hear it all the time from grandparents. “I just want to know the kids are ok” and “I love to see the kids but I also love to see them go home again as long is everything is ok. We feel the parents should come first in a child’s lives and nobody should interfere with how they bring up their kids. Not even the government. It would be a great thing if grandparents and fathers and even mothers can all work together for the sake of the kids.

Grandparents Apart UK have a very good record on counselling grandparents and lots have them have gotten back into their grandchildren’s lives. It can work if everybody remembers it’s the kid’s interests that we are dealing with.

Let’s get behind Ian and help make a difference.

These are the Celebrities who have signed the petition for a dedicated Minister for older people

Celebrities

Celebrities with Grey Pride! These famous faces have all signed our petition calling for a dedicated Minister for Older People, and spoken out to help raise awareness of the campaign

Angela Rippon, "The collective experience and wisdom of Britain's older generation brings enormous value to our society, and it is high time that people of all ages appreciate the role over-60s can play in our workplaces, communities and families. I join Anchor in calling on our Government to create a dedicated Minister for Older People to give all people in their Golden Age a champion at the highest level."

Tony Robinson
,
"I've been a campaigner for the infirm elderly over the past ten years, and have become only too aware of how easy it is for those in authority to marginalise old people and ignore their needs. Today the elderly population is growing as budgets grow tighter. We need a robust voice at ministerial level to ensure that they can spend their last years in dignity, not distress."

Richard Wilson, "As a fully qualified member of the older generation on and off screen, I fully empathise with Anchor's Grey Pride campaign to appoint a Minister for Older People. It would be a big step in securing the support needed for older people to truly enjoy their twilight years.
It is important that older people have a clear voice at the highest level of Government, especially when they represent such a significant and growing proportion of the population.

Jimmy Tarbuck, “Getting old is a part of life, so I fully support the call for a Minister for Older People; we need someone to look after the interests of us more mature folk. An ageing population, combined with cuts to pension pots and concerns over how to fund care for the elderly, means it's more important than ever that older people's needs are being addressed in Parliament by someone who can see the full picture. And remember, getting older is not an exclusive club, we are all members and it comes quicker than you think."

Anita Dobson, "Whether on or off screen, growing old is one of the few certainties in life, so it makes perfect sense that Government should install a dedicated Minister for Older People. Anchor’s Grey Pride campaign is justifiably raising this point at the highest level, furthermore, its success will hopefully ensure that the needs and concerns of older people of the current and future generations are adequately looked after."

Tamzin Outhwaite, “I am happy to support the Grey Pride campaign as it stands to improve the lives of so many people in this country. Hopefully, the appointment of a Minister for Older People will relieve some of the anxieties associated with growing old by making sure older people are being looked after at the very heart of Government. After all, old age is a part of life and should be something people look forward to and celebrate, not fear."

Nick Ross,The rapid ageing of our population is an unprecedented phenomenon and it is far from clear that policymakers have thought through the enormity of the implications.
I strongly endorse Grey Pride’s appeal that, one way or another Whitehall, Westminster and the devolved administrations simply must make Britain’s ageing a major and consistent political priority."

Linda Robson,It’s time us grumpy old women and our grumpy old men had someone to look after us. We've spent our lives looking after our families now it's our turn."

Pax Baldwin, "It's great to get involved in a very important cause."

Vince Cable hears our call for a dedicated Minister for Older People!

Business Secretary and Twickenham MP, Vince Cable met with constituents supporting Grey Pride this week and discussed our call on the government!
Mr Cable attended a coffee morning at a retirement housing scheme in Hampton Wick last Wednesday where the residents were quick to draw his attention to our campaign aim of giving older people a voice at the highest level.

The Grey Priders, including centenarian Ruth Clark, explained why the petition to appoint a Minister for Older People is so important to them, focusing on the need to celebrate growing older and the contribution older people make to our society.

As a cabinet minister Mr Cable cannot sign the petition, but he did recognise that older people are fast becoming one of the largest groups in the United Kingdom and said:
“The Government is giving priority to the concerns of older people, which is why we have protected the state pension and are embarking on reforms to help people cope with social care. I’m of pensionable age myself, though a very active pensioner, and believe strongly that people of retirement age who are fit and well should have the opportunity to contribute.”
July has seen a huge uptake in the number of MPs backing the campaign, we have seen support grow up and down the country with Grey Priders making the most of MP’s surgery hours to raise awareness.

Has your MP heard of Grey Pride? By simply sending out a letter to their local MP, Grey Priders have got the following MPs to sigh our petition during the last week alone:

Martin Horwood, MP for Cheltenham
Sam Gyimha, MP for East Surrey
Rosie Winterton, MP for Doncaster Central
Julie Hilling, MP for Bolton West
Andy Love, MP for Edmonton

Support for Dedicated Minister from Anchor's Grey Pride Campaign.

As an organisation dedicated to Grandparents, which is also hoping to instate a Minister for Older People in Scotland, we are writing to you to ask you for your support in terms of a supporting quote and would be very grateful if you could tweet about our campaign -www.greypride.org.uk. We would be happy to do the same in return. As you know, appointing a Minister for Older People, who will oversee a more joined-up Government approach to the care of older people, is key to protecting this important and vulnerable section of society.

MASSIVE STATE SPONSORED CHILD ABUSE AND TRAFFICKING

MASSIVE STATE SPONSORED CHILD ABUSE AND TRAFFICKING AND COVER UP BY THE STATE AND ITS AGENTS

Have you experienced any of the following:
  • Children taken under false pretences?
  • Bullying by Children's Services, Cafcass, Local Authority?
  • False verbal and documentary evidence in Court?
  • Collusion behind your back by your Legal Team with the Local Authority legal team?
  • MPs ignoring you and your plight? Child(ren) being abused in the 'care' of Children's Services?
  • Mental breakdown because of the attack on your family?
Do you hold information and evidence concerning:
  • State trafficking of children?
  • Falsifying of Family Court Documents?
  • Children disappearing into the care system?
  • Police deliberately blocking investigations into child abuse rings?
  • Misinformation by the BBC and mainstream media?
  • False help and support groups, charities and people?
Have you attended meetings in Westminster that 'pat you on the head' and achieve nothing? - then you need to attend and be an active participant in Blowing the Whistle - Child Stealing by the State.
We need you and your evidence. We need you in numbers, because the State hides the evidence by isolating victims or controlling the support organisations to whom you turn. By making out that only a few isolated families are affected the State can control national media to hide the truth.
Please provide a 2 page summary of the basic facts of your case and indicate evidence that you hold. Here is an example to help you do this. Active participants will be asked to provide evidence for use at the conference. Real evidence is vital to stopping the unlawful abuse of families and children.
Any questions or for more information, please email: childstealingbythestate@ukcolumn.org

by chick on Tue Feb 09, 2010 3:01 am

Gentlemen as allway's we do not mean we should be given priority over father's at no time have we stated this we are a forum for grandparent's and we have allways stated, after it was brought to our attention that in all cases provided that there is no danger to a child/ren both parent's should be involved in a there upbringing and pfcourse the same goe's for grandparents as well the reason i am writing this is to clear up any confusion that we should be given prority over fathers.it speak's for its self really as father's and of course some mother's have to work to support there child/ren plus both parent's also after working all week whether it be a mother bringing up a child/ren and visa versa off course. this is where grandparents can be both a valuble asset to both the children and the parent's so come on all resident parent's forget about the arguments he fighting you had. it doesent matter who' was to blame the children love you both if either parent is bad to there children , the oldrer kids will sort that out them selfs and wont want to go to the parent who is bad to them but please be honest and leave it up to them to choose not you. honest trust me you both will be happier with in yourselfs it' mean's you both can go out , for the sake off the children please be civil to each other for there sake and honest . you both will get on a lot better than you did when you were together please give it a try it will be a bit tense at the beginnig but it will ease off after the first two or three visit's And when the kids are happy it reflects on all so give it a go please for all our happiness and wellbeing all round.

Dedicated Minister for Older People.

In tonight’s main BBC news it was revealed that older people are being neglected badly.

In our work we come across a lot of older great grandparents in their 80s we are telling us of the same problem. “Thrown on the scrap heap” and not bothered about because they are old and it is getting worse.   Grandparents Apart UK have in the past week entered a petition to the Scottish Parliament for a dedicated Minister for Older People. To be made public shortly according to the Scottish petitions office in Edinburgh.

Most grandparents are older people and are being taken advantage of because all the want is a quiet life. To know their family is safe and to see them on occasion but this Scottish Government is denying them peace in their old age, in fact they go out their way to cause them anguish by making contact with their grandchildren akin to climbing Everest. They have no time for older people because they are bottom of the government’s priority list. Shame on them!!

When this petition (A dedicated Minister for Older People) is published I would urge each and every one to sign it. I would like to see a massive surge from all of you to help yourselves.

BBC are doing our job of highlighting the failed care system of our country.

BBC East ender’s have the perfect scenario of Billy Mitchell and his partner Julie who was also brought up in the care system. They are portrayed as non achievers, no hopers, poorly educated and always in trouble, never holding down a job and totally irresponsible. Their granddaughter has turned up and she is the perfect street aware example of a child brought up in care always running away, unmanageable and selfish fulfilling all the criteria of a modern gang member.

Do we want children to grow up like that? The rate social services are snatching children and force adopting then there will be an explosion of gangs in the near future. Children are best kept with their grandparents in a stable home loving environment whenever possible but at the rate social services are rejecting them you would think all grandparents were bad.  Surely the thousands of grandparents that have contacted us cannot be wrong.

Thanks BBC for such a true to life scenario.

A very keen journalist willing to promote grandparents problems.

Dear members of Grandparents Apart,

My name is Susannah Cardy and I'm a freelance journalist. I am planning to write an article about grandparents who have lost contact with their grandchildren through no fault of their own. I know the legal system allows you no more rights of access than a stranger and  I feel that this is a huge and heart-breaking problem that needs to be highlighted. Jimmy Deuchars, who runs Grandparents Apart, has very kindly agreed to send this e-mail out to all of the members of Grandparents Apart.

 - I would be really interested to speak to anyone who has wanted to adopt their grandchildren but instead seen them taken into care - perhaps because social services viewed the grandparents as too old.
  - Or anyone who has lost touch with their grandchildren, perhaps because of a divorce or death in the family.
- I would also love to hear from grandparents who are bringing up their grandchildren but do not feel they are properly supported by social services. Although my original idea was to write just about grandparents who are apart from their grandchildren,  I know that this can be a huge problem too.

Just to give you a bit more information about me, I'm a freelance journalist (my most recent article was for the Telegraph and was about my father's wish to die from terminal cancer at home). Before becoming a writer, I was a television producer and director, making a range of documentaries, including one for Channel Four about grandparents who adopt their grandchildren.

I would love to hear from anybody who is interested in telling me their story. If anybody is slightly unsure, that's fine. Please get in touch with me anyway. To start with, we'd just have a chat on the phone so that I can find out about your story and you can find out more about the article. Then you can decide if you'd like to be involved or not. My telephone number is 0208 444 1036. I will try to answer your call directly but if the answerphone is on, please leave a message with your name and telephone number and I will call you back. Or you can e-mail me on susannahcardy@hotmail.com

I think Grandparents Apart does a wonderful job and I wish all of you the very best in your quest to see your grandchildren.

Best wishes

Susannah Cardy

Our own Government is to blame.

With years of experience behind us in family problems we have come to the conclusion that the main obstacles to family unity are our own governments.  The governments claim that families and grandparents are important in a child’s life but act in an opposite manner.

It is of our opinion that Government funded Woman’s Aid are actively engaged in keeping families apart by counselling resident parents on how to keep grandparents and non resident parents out of a child’s life, because of this education they are learning how to flout court orders.   I do not state this with malice but to try to find a way for them to do their very worthwhile job and still protect the innocent, namely the children and grandparents that are victimised through no fault of their own. Woman’s Aid refused to meet with us in an attempt to resolve.

The government via social services also excludes any family member if they are not in total agreement to what social services want. They fabricate meetings and add on what suits their case and this muddies up the real best interests of the child. The government is turning a blind eye to this as long it is said to be in the child’s best interest and often it is in the social services best interests. All this muddying of the rules confuses everyone.

Social services are infamous at making huge mistakes regarding the care of children therefore it is questionable that they should have the power to override a child’s family who love the children and care for them in a holistic manner.

The forgotten children are children that are in a drug or alcohol home where no-one can get to them if they are being abused until the unthinkable happens. We all know of a family that are not treated right like the NSPCC show in their adverts.  The law can protect the abusers by granting them banning orders for grandparents or anyone else. There is a 37% rise in drug and alcohol fatalities (one nearly every day) “Who” is looking out for these children that are involved? No-one!

Don’t vote in lawyers at elections. Vote for people like yourself who know how you live and what you need.

The Forgotten Children of Drug and Alcohol abuse.

The above was put to the SNP Government by Grandparents Apart UK their answer was “We have nothing further to add to our previous correspondence with you”  Turning a blind eye will not make the abuse go away. It is obvious they had no answers to this problem or are even willing to resolve it. They have previously stated they also have no answer to non-compliance of court orders.

The unique relationship children could have with their grandparents must be explored and supported to the full for the welfare of our children. The ethos of the Charter for Grandchildren is not being considered. There is an army of grandparents out there where the majority of them would be delighted to help should problems arise in their offspring’s home. For example, if their mum or dad is unable to look after them it would benefit the child to be cared for in a known home environment until they can be returned to their parents rather than being taken to strangers or forced adopted.

The effects of total exclusion from their birth family can be with them all their lives and lead to insecurity and problems for society when they grow up with a rejected non achiever bitter attitude.
